What is spaying or neutering?

A spay is also known as an ovarian hysterectomy. It is a procedure where we remove the ovaries and uterus, and neutering is a procedure where we take out the testicles.

How soon should you bring your dog or cat to see a veterinarian to have them spayed or neutered?

Typically, we recommend cats and dogs be spayed and neutered around six months of age, typically before their first heat cycle.

What are the medical benefits of spaying or neutering?

One of the health benefits is that it eliminates the risk of pregnancy and helps tackle population control. Spaying and neutering appear to be associated with longer lifespans. When left unspayed, females have a higher risk of mammary cancer, and by spaying, you eliminate the risk of uterine or ovarian cancer, as well as an infection of the uterus called pyometra.

How should I care for my dog or cat before and after spaying or neutering?

Before spaying, the biggest thing we recommend is fasting them the night before or the morning of. So pick their food up late that night so that they're not eating through the night, but that's the biggest care prior to the procedure. After the procedure, when we send them home with you, we send a detailed list of instructions, and we help walk you through the best way to care for them. It typically involves a lot of rest.

My male cat sprays all over the house. Will neutering help?

Typically, neutering can reduce the urge to mark around the house and reduce the odor of their urine. It generally does help reduce their spraying, but there is always that small percentage that does not stop.
