The thyroid gland is located under the skin at the center of the neck. The thyroid produces thyroid hormone and regulates its blood concentration.
Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism results from too little circulating thyroid hormone. Typically, there is no known biological reason for hypothyroidism, though it is occasionally caused by an inflammation of the gland. Hypothyroidism can be a debilitating disease if not treated, but with proper treatment your dog/cat can live a long and healthy life.
Symptoms
Hair loss, dry skin, brittle hair, and bleaching of the hair coat may all indicate your pet is developing hypothyroidism. It frequently causes pets to become lethargic and overweight, even on a limited diet.
Diagnosis
A blood test will be done to confirm the diagnosis. Medication will be prescribed to make up for the lack of production of the thyroid hormone.
