The thyroid gland is located under the skin at
the center of the neck. The thyroid produces thyroid hormone and regulates its
blood concentration.
Hypothyroidism
This is the result of too little
circulating thyroid hormone. Typically, there is no known biological reasoning
behind hypothyroidism. Occasionally it can be caused by an inflammation of the
thyroid gland. Hypothyroidism can be a debilitating disease if not treated but
with proper treatment your dog/cat can live a long and healthy life.
Symptoms
Hair loss, dry skin, brittle hair, and
bleaching of the hair coat. It frequently causes pets to become lethargic and
overweight, even on a limited diet.
Diagnosis
A blood test will be done to confirm the
diagnosis. Medication will be prescribed to make up for the lack of production
of the thyroid hormone.
